Abstract
Agroforestry science as a new scientific method which emphasize on sustainability and stability of the environment can represent a practical remedy for the increasing degradation of natural resources. Woody species as the essential components of such systems has special interaction with herbal understorey. Zagros mountain chain of Iran contains oak open forests with rich understorey vegetation. This study evaluate the effect of canopy cover on pasture yield, quality and composition under two dominant tree species of these forests i.e. Quercus brantii Liddl and Acer monspesulanum L. The results show that vegetation composition percentage of palatable species and their productivity in open areas is more than understorey zones, but the quality of these plants will increase which seems to be resulted from favorable effect of trees on the soil condition such as more organic matter and absorbable phosphor in understorey soil. So while removing trees may enhance pasture productivity, this benefit may be offset by a reduction in pasture quality.
